Electrical Machinery Generalization

Types of Rotating Machines

1. Generators-mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy.
2. Motors-electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy.
3.Rotary converters-electrical energy of one form is changed into electrical energy of another; the usual arrangement is to change ac energy to dc energy ;although the reverse is sometimes done.
4.Frequency Converters- to change ac electrical energy at one frequency into ac electrical energy at another frequency.

Primemover- a mechanical machine that drives(rotated) the electric generator.

Ex. steam turbine, gasoline engine or electric motor

* generator action can take place when and only there is relative motion between conducting wires(usually copper) and magnetic lines of force

parts of electric generators

1) even set of electromagnets(field poles)

Field Poles- is built of a stack of steel laminations having good magnetic qualities.

motors and generatorsTypes of Field Poles

salient pole field-when driven by a slow speed prime mover, the electromagnets are bolted to a hub fastened to the shaft so that they project outward toward the stationary armature core

non salient pole field-the field winding is placed in a slotted core when driven by a high speed turbine.

2) laminated steel core containing current carrying copper wires(armature)
Armature windings-it is where the voltage is generated in the generator or where the torque is develop in the motor.
